Larger than Life

THROUGH THE USE OF NARRATIVE SOMETHING HAPPENS.........
I completed a part time 5 year Degree in the Practice and Theory of Visual Art at Chelsea College of Art & Design in July 2003. I am an experienced arts practitoner and educationalist working in multmedia which include digital imagery both photgraphic, and text photography, video, sound and narrtive based work.
I trained as an Arts Specialist Youth Worker with Islington Council for two years and as an Art Gallery Educationalist with the Chisenhale Gallery, Fine Art Tutor with Young @ Art for the London Institute (now known as the University of the Arts London) as well as a trained Professional Artist in Schools via the Institute of Education Course which was funded via the London Arts Board which was run by Lesley Burgess.
In my role as a Youth Worker. I worked with an under 14 year old girls group from diverse backgrounds including Irish, English and Carribean cultures. We had lots of fun and learnt much about one another through discussion, play, social education in relation to personal development programmes, health, identity, sexuality, media, peer pressure, cultural diversity were explored and discussed.
As an Arts Educationalist, I developed Contemporary Art Education Programmes at the Chisenhale Gallery in East London. Working alongside Contemporary Artists, Curators such as Wilson Twins, Pippilotti Wrist, Michael Landy and Art Educationalsits. we put together stimulating workshops for teachers, children and special needs students involing activities such as set designing, video work, group discussion, making of work collectively and individually. Aural and visual language were devloped in relation to the art Theory and Practice.
The training with the Institute of Education and tutoring on the Young @ Art Programme was very significant in my acceptance of being a Professional Artist. Through facilitating, inspiring and accessing our personal and universal areas of knoweldge and creativity.
I was interested in the development of language through the arts supported by IT and developing internet research skills. I taught scanning, photo manipulation and how to use a multimedia authroring package called Hyperstudio. The Project was called Vanitas, and involved the making of virtual sculptures through personally chosen objects relating to each persons past, present and future.
I was and am still interested in the interconnection of Traditional and Contemporary modes of Art and how we as human beings are involved in this process and need to express and explore this big area called living. 'Rite of passage' is an area I will be exploring in future work.
The ability to de-mystify the artist and their working process is essential to our personal empowerment but also the paradox of this is an essential tool in relation to the making of art; we are all creative and pro-active beings and have different approaches and expressions of this space. With the making come responsibilities toward ourselves and one another which include; playfulness, personal development, empathy, debate, encounter, reading, working, boredom, happiness, sadness, struggle, openess, humour, failure, conflict and acceptenace of ourselves and others ideas and perspectives. I am very interested in developing mentoring and peer learning projects in educational settings. Life is an art and we cannot make it alone!
TALITHA JENKINS CURRICULUM VITAE
Email: talithaj@ntlworld.com
AWARDS
Southwark Open'95 The South London Gallery 1st prize - Insideoutside - The judges included assistant keeper of Modern Art at the Tate Gallery, Frances Morris, the painter, Eugene Palmer, and multimedia artist, Keith Piper.
EXHIBITIONS
August'05 Regeneration Art Project - The 142 Project Installation piece 'Insideoutside'
June’03 University of the Arts London - Manresa Road Larger than Life 2003 - Video Installation Iris 2003 - Video Installation
Oct’02 Show Apartment – Group Show in Battersea The Feminine Sublime – Photo Narrative
May’02 None at the Nunnery – Group Show Film piece Earthbound in Poetical Real Time - Moving Painting
April’97 Institute of Education - London Arts Board Professional Artists in Schools Exhibition The Vanitas Project
March’96 Eclectic Eccentrics - Curated and exhibited Camberwell Gallery 'Insideoutside'
Nov’95 Southwark Open – South London Gallery 'Insideoutside'
Nov’95 Interventions - Holland Park 'Zip' Latex and steel
Feb’90 Terrence Higgins Trust Show – Untitled I Untitled 1 - Mixed Media
THESIS PAPERS
April 1997 Part of MA module for Professional Artists In Schools at the Institute of Education funded via the London Arts Board.
'Do young people need the development of communication skills through creativity and reasoning with an underlying basis of empathy in order to avoid prolonged adolescence?'
April 2003 Chlesea College of Art & Design: Practice and Theory of Visual Art BA Hons Degree Part-Time
'The Interconnection of the Traditional and Contemporary in Visual Art: Encounters with the Inclusive Sublime'

 WORK IN PROGRESS
 LARGER THAN LIFE...
A series of video narratives have been collected during my journeys to South Africa, Ireland, Spain and London.
